Press Monitoring

Round Counter and Statistics

Features

Press Monitoring - Electronically watches the user's actions to make sure they occur in the correct sequence.  Alerts the user when a mistake is made such as short stroking the press, forgetting to rotate the shellplate on a manual indexing press, or any other action out of sequence.  This can prevent a double charge, squib, or light charge round.  Press Monitoring can prevent injury from a blown up firearm by helping the user produce safer, better quality ammunition.  The best way to understand this feature is to see it in action in the above Press Monitoring Video.  Press Monitoring does not eliminate the need for good reloading habits and attention.  It is designed as an extra safety; almost like a friend watching over your shoulder to make sure you operate the press properly.  It is also helpful when teaching beginners to reload properly.

Press Light - The most important thing you can do to ensure safety is look into each round you load and verify that the correct amount of powder is present. The press light lights up even deep cases so you can clearly see inside and verify the powder level before placing a bullet on top.  This light also blinks when the unit is in alert mode as a secondary way to notify the user; this may be especially helpful for users who are hearing impaired.

Dual Power Support and Power Management - Automatically switches between two power sources instantly depending on which is available.  Normally a user will be using the wall power adapter (efficient switching type, included), but if wall power fails, internal alkaline batteries (8xAA, also included) provide power if needed.  It also has a power management feature that reduces power consumption 60% while running on battery power.  Completely user configurable.

The Press Monitor is 100% designed and hand built here in the USA.  I have taken great effort to make every aspect of it be the best it can be, from the firmware to the electronic components it is built with to the care I use in assembling and building.  This is not an item that is put together in some overseas factory by someone who doesn't care about how well it works.  I have carefully designed it to include features such as ESD Protection, Automatic Resettable Fuse Protection, Flash Memory Self Integrity Check, Independently Debounced Inputs, and a Diagnostics Mode.

Round Counter and Statistics - Up to 8 statistics for the current session are supported including:  Rounds (Round Counter), Time, Rounds Per Hour (Current), Rounds Per Hour (Overall), Remaining Rounds, Remaining Time, Power Measure Grains, and Powder Measure Rounds Remaining.  Along with these 8 statistics, 3 long term statistics maintain a Total Rounds, Total Time, and Total Rounds Per Hour for all reloading sessions.

Reminders -  Reminders are used to report specific events; they do a quick beep and display on the screen for 5 seconds, but the user is free to continue working right through them.  These can be enabled or disabled depending on the user's preference.  A completed reminder lets the user know when a desired number of rounds to load is done.  A powder low reminder indicates when the powder measure has fallen below a certain level (see Powder Tracking for more information).  A press maintenance reminder indicates when it is time to perform press maintenance.  An interval reminder can be set to remind the user every so many rounds such as 25, 50, 100, etc.  A RPH too fast reminder can be set to tell the user when he is going too fast.  A break reminder can occur periodically to remind the user to take a small break and keep his mind fresh.  A low power reminder will indicate if power is too low.

Powder Tracking - Keeps track of the amount of powder in the measure; can issue a low powder reminder and analyze powder usage.  Please note that there is no sensor for this feature and it relies on the user to weigh the powder container before and again after adding powder to the measure.  This is the only way the Press Monitor knows how much powder was added to the powder measure.  It automatically deducts the specified charge weight for each round and indicates if the powder measure falls below a specific amount.  The user can see at a glance how many grains are remaining and how many rounds can be loaded on the remaining powder.  A powder analysis feature will compare the actual used powder by weight to the expected powder used.

Easy to Use - Do not be overwhelmed by the many features.  Using the Press Monitor is as simple as turning it on and starting to load.  Everything is menu driven on the bright 40x2 character liquid crystal display and the user can customize most everything.  Simple menus in plain English control nearly every aspect of the Press Monitor.

Supported Presses - The Press Monitor supports these presses:  Dillon Square Deal B, Dillon 550, Dillon 650, Dillon 1050, Hornady Lock N Load, Lee Classic Turret, Lee 3 Hole Turret, Lee 4 Hole Turret, Lee Load Master, Lee Pro 1000, RCBS Pro 2000.  It can also support most other progressive or turret presses.  The user can also move the unit from one press to another by unplugging it from one and plugging it into the other.  Extra wiring harnesses are available in the Ordering area.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ):

Q:  What if I have a problem?  What type of warranty is offered?
A:  I stand behind my products.  I am offering a full 1 year warranty with it, but I like to deal with companies that take of their customers, and I will do the same.  What this means is that even if you have had your unit longer than a year, I will make every effort to get it working for you even if that means you ship it back to me and I repair it for you at no charge.  The great thing about the Press Monitor is that it is completely repairable and I can replace any component that fails without much difficulty.  I have tried to select good solid components so failures are rare.  If the unit has been damaged by some mistake of the customer, I will still repair it at whatever my cost is.

Q:  What if I want to return my unit?
A:  I have a 30 day money back policy if the unit is returned to me in good condition.  With that said, I want customers to be happy and if someone wants to return their unit at 45 days, I will most likely accommodate their needs.

Q:  How difficult is it to install?
A:  All you will have to do is attach the press sensors and wiring harness, turn the unit on, and start using it.

Q:  Does it require any maintenance?
A:  Other than replacing the backup batteries if they become depleted, there is no maintenance that needs to be performed.  The sensors I supply are rated for hundreds of thousands of contacts and should last a very long time.

Q:  How do you attach the press sensors?
A:  I supply strong 3M double stick tape to attach them.  The manual has pictures and instructions on exactly how to do this.

Q:  How many sensors are necessary?
A:  One to three sensors are needed, depending on your press type and monitoring mode.  The manual covers this in more detail.

Q:  Can the Press Monitor interface to a PC?
A:  Not at this time.  We do not currently have plans to implement a serial or USB connection.

Customer Comments

Dale B. from Fulton, NY:  I received my Press Monitor and I must say WOW! I am impressed with the quality, you must have put a lot of work into the design of it.  I am glad you developed some thing like this because it is so easy to loose you position while reloading when interrupted and this will go a long way to help prevent a squib or double charge.   Martin C. from Sabattus, ME:  Alan has put a substantial amount of research and time into the press monitor. I am very pleased with mine and it gives me a failsafe way to insure my reloads are reliable. The other features of the monitor such as the Rounds counter, Rounds per hour and Powder Measure Features are great options so I can keep track of my reloading.
